Being a twin is one of those things that sounds way cooler to everybody else than it actually feels when you’re the one living it. 😂
Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some perks.
For one, I have a built-in sidekick. I have literally had someone with me from day one. Whether we’re getting along, getting on each other’s nerves, or pretending we’re not listening to each other, there’s something funny about always having another person around who has basically been there through everything.
And yes, there are also little twin privileges that I fully support.
Like if somebody is giving something away for free and I want it twice? Technically, there are two of us. Mind your business. 😂
Being a twin also makes people think I’m way more interesting than I actually am.
The second somebody finds out I’m a twin, suddenly I become a documentary.
“Wait, you’re a twin?!”
Yes.
“Do you feel her feelings?”
No.
“Can you read each other’s minds?”
No.
“Have y’all ever switched places?”
PLEASE.
And my personal favorite:
“Are y’all twins?”
No. We just happened to show up at the same time, from the same mother, looking suspiciously related. 😭
The questions never end.
Then there’s the comparison.
That part gets old very fast.
Who’s taller? Who’s funnier? Who’s smarter? Who’s more outgoing? Who did better in school? Who looks more like this person? Who acts more like that person?
At some point you want to scream, WE ARE TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
Being twins doesn’t mean we have the same personality, the same interests, the same opinions, or even the same memories of things that happened to both of us. And growing up, constantly being compared can definitely make you want your own identity outside of being “the twins.”
Also, my twin was absolutely my first hater. 😂
Before I ever had to worry about anybody else getting on my nerves, criticizing me, arguing with me, or knowing exactly what button to press, I had her.
She had years of practice.
But that’s also kind of what makes the relationship so funny. You can irritate each other beyond belief and still have this bond that’s hard to explain to people who don’t have it.
Being a twin is having a built-in sidekick, occasional enemy, free-stuff accomplice, lifelong comparison partner, and someone who has known you longer than almost anybody else.
Would I choose to be a twin again?
Probably.
But I’m still not answering whether we can feel each other’s pain. 😂🤍
