Somewhere along the way, posting online started feeling like asking for permission.
You post a picture, and somebody thinks you should’ve picked a different one. You share an opinion, and somebody tells you to keep it to yourself. You talk about your life, and suddenly people who have never met you are deciding what you should’ve kept private.
I’m not saying every thought needs to go on the internet. I keep some things to myself, too. But you get to decide what you’re comfortable sharing. Somebody else being uncomfortable with it doesn’t automatically mean you did something wrong.
Post the picture you like, even if it isn’t perfectly posed. Talk about the show you’ve been watching. Celebrate the little thing you’re proud of. If you want to share what you’re going through, you can do that. If you’d rather keep it private, you can do that too. It’s your choice.
And yes, once you post something, people might disagree. I talk about that in this week’s episode of Hear Me Out. Disagreement is part of being online. But some people act like seeing a post they wouldn’t make gives them the right to tell its creator how to live.
You can scroll past. I do it all the time. 😂
I think a lot of us spend too much time wondering how a post will be received. Will people think it’s silly? Will anybody care? Is this too much? Meanwhile, it could be something that made you laugh or a moment you wanted to remember. That’s reason enough to share it.
So post what you want to post. Keep what you want to keep. Let other people make their own choices, too.
The internet has enough rules nobody asked for.
