You Can’t Take It With You

A reminder to enjoy God’s blessings without making temporary things the center of our lives.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” — Matthew 6:19–20

We spend so much of our lives worried about what we have.

Do I have enough money?
Is my house nice enough?
Do I have the right clothes?
Am I successful enough?
Does my life look as good as everyone else’s?

And there is nothing wrong with wanting a comfortable life. There is nothing wrong with working hard, enjoying what God has blessed you with, or having goals for yourself.

The problem comes when those things become our treasure.

Everything we own on this earth is temporary. The money in our accounts, the things sitting in our closets, the cars in our driveways, the titles beside our names, and even the accomplishments we are most proud of will eventually be left behind.

We came into this world without any of it, and we will leave without it too.

Jesus reminds us not to spend our lives building treasure in a place where nothing lasts.

Our real treasure is somewhere else.

It is in Heaven.

That changes the way we should look at life. Maybe we do not have to spend so much time comparing what we have to what someone else has. Maybe we do not have to feel behind because someone owns more, earns more, travels more, or seems more successful.

None of those things determine how rich a life truly is.

A life filled with faith, love, kindness, generosity, forgiveness, and obedience to God carries a value that cannot be measured by a bank account.

One day, the things we thought were so important will not matter nearly as much as we believed they did.

So enjoy the blessings God gives you. Work toward your goals. Build a life you are grateful for.

Just remember where your real treasure is.

Because everything here has an expiration date.

But what God has prepared for us does not.

A Prayer for This Week

Lord, help me remember that this world is temporary. Keep me from placing my worth in money, possessions, success, or anything else I cannot take with me. Teach me to appreciate the blessings You give me without making them the center of my life. Help me store my treasure in Heaven by living with faith, love, generosity, and a heart that seeks You first. Amen.

Reflection

What is something temporary that I have been giving too much importance lately?

Until next time... hear Him out. 🤍
